Dr. Jordan Poley:
Dr. Jordan Poley, Director of LabTech Services at Onda, brings deep expertise in pathology and microbiology to the aquaculture industry, leading laboratory operations with a focus on advancing research and delivering practical solutions. He is known for his hands-on approach, ensuring trials are conducted with precision and integrity, and for fostering a culture of scientific rigor and innovation within his team. Based in Prince Edward Island, Dr. Poley collaborates closely with industry partners, academic institutions, and regulatory agencies to drive best practices and knowledge exchange in aquaculture.
Ivan Tankovski:
As Director of Nutrition at Onda, Ivan Tankovski leverages over 15 years of expertise in nutritional sciences and a background in vaccine development to advance aquaculture nutrition through innovative research and leadership. He leads Onda’s Nutrition & FeedTech units, overseeing the evaluation of diverse feed ingredients and the production of customized diets for various aquatic species. With experience managing more than 50 projects involving novel protein sources and feed additives, Ivan is dedicated to driving sustainable growth and elevating nutrition standards in the aquaculture industry worldwide.
Dr. Angela Liu:
Dr. Angela Liu is an accomplished aquaculture nutrition researcher with nine years of experience in government and industry collaborations across multinational teams. She has led and contributed to a range of R&D projects on fish and shrimp nutrition, applying advanced techniques such as stable isotope analysis to improve feed efficiency and sustainability. Angela has published seven first-author papers in peer-reviewed journals and has been recognized with presentation awards for her scientific communication. Her work spans experimental design, data analysis, and stakeholder reporting, with a strong focus on translating research outcomes into practical solutions for aquaculture operations.

EVALUATING THE DIETARY INCLUSION OF A THYMOL-BASED BLEND TO MODULATE RESISTANCE AND SURVIVAL AGAINST Yersinia ruckeri IN RAINBOW TROUT

A new feed ingredient called Prototype TCS, made from natural plant extracts, was tested to see if it could help young rainbow trout fight off a common fish disease caused by the bacteria Yersinia ruckeri. In the study, fish that ate food containing Prototype TCS had fewer deaths and showed fewer signs of illness after being exposed to the bacteria, compared to fish that ate food without Prototype TCS. The fish on the special diet were 15.6% less likely to die from the disease, and their overall risk of getting seriously sick was reduced by nearly 30%. These results suggest that adding Prototype TCS to trout diets can help keep fish healthier and could reduce the need for antibiotics in fish farming. This makes it a promising option for more sustainable and responsible aquaculture.
EFFICACY OF DIFFERENT VACCINE ADMINISTRATION STRATEGIES AGAINST NORTH AMERICAN AND EUROPEAN GENOTYPES OF INFECTIOUS SALMON ANEMIA VIRUS (ISAV) IN ATLANTIC SALMON (Salmo salar L.)

This study tested three different vaccination approaches to protect Atlantic salmon from two subtypes of the ISA virus, which can cause serious disease on fish farms. Salmon that received any of the vaccine regimen survived significantly better than those that didn’t get vaccinated. However, vaccine efficacy depended on viral subtype used in challenge where, for the highly virulent North American subtype, no difference in single injection, concurrent dual vaccination, or booster regimens was observed. For the less virulent European isotype, Fish given one vaccine or a vaccine plus booster had higher levels of survival compared to those given both vaccines at the same time. Importantly, none of the vaccine regimens affected salmon growth, visceral health and pigmentation status, showing that all the vaccination methods were safe.
EVALUATION OF CANOLA MEAL IN ATLANTIC SALMON DIETS: EFFECTS ON NUTRIENT DIGESTIBILITY, GROWTH AND HEALTH PERFORMANCE

Researchers tested whether canola meal could be successfully incorporated in salmon diets as a protein source. Through 2 in vivo studies, it was demonstrated that up to 10% canola meal in the salmon’s diet did not negatively affect the fish’s growth and health. The salmon fed these diets were just as healthy and grew just as well as those on traditional feed for the full duration of the study. These results suggest that canola meal could be brought into the formulator’s ingredient basket, Further work has been done to assess the health benefits and life cycle assessment of canola meal with results still pending.
